Conferencing and Collaborative Computing

چکیده

Despite their long research history, few synchronous conferencing tools have found widespread deployment and use. In the area of application sharing, the diversity of platforms and issues of security and state maintenance are predominant. The paper discusses some of the areas where further research and engineering work is necessary, particularly for the audio and video components of multimedia conferences. Hardware support needs to be designed to avoid unnecessary high-rate data transfer through system bus or memory. Operating systems need to be aware of the scheduling requirements of continuous-media applications, which differ from both those of classical computing applications and industrial real-time systems. Networks need to be designed to provide end-to-end quality of service assurance and scalable multicast. Since the diversity of conferencing applications far exceeds that of small-group sessions, mechanisms to reuse conferencing applications in a variety of settings have to be developed.

An Investigation into the Use of Net-Conferencing Groupware in Simulation Modelling

Simulation modellers are major users of software tools. Advances in computing such as collaborative working tools and distributed technologies have created new possibilities for innovation in simulation modelling. Collectively, we address these as Collaborative Support for Simulation Modelling (CSSM). To contribute to CSSM, we consider the problem of whether or not it is possible to support hum...

Dynamics and Leadership of Online Discussion: A Model of Collaborative Discourse in Computer Conferencing

This paper presents a conceptual study of collaborative discourse in computer conferencing for adult education. The purpose of the study is to examine the dynamics of text based asynchronous discussion, the role of online leadership, and the relationship between them. Based on the syntheses of existing literature on collaborative inquiry in computer conferencing and the roles of online teachers...

DisTriB: Distributed Trust Management Model Based on Gossip Learning and Bayesian Networks in Collaborative Computing Systems

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...

Centralized Conferencing using SIP

Multiparty conferencing is an important telephony service, provided in the PSTN by conference bridges. Internet telephony can enhance this basic service by video conferencing and collaborative work. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) can support many different conferencing architectures, including the centralized conferencing server model. We describe design issues and challenges in implemen...

Fostering collaborative knowledge construction in desktop video-conferencing: effects of content schemes and cooperation scripts in peer teaching settings

Video-conferencing is expected to become increasingly important for tele-learning environments. In contrast to asynchronous, text-based computer-mediated communication, video-conferencing facilitates cooperation tasks that require highly frequent and continuous coordination. Typical kinds of such cooperation tasks are found in peer teaching settings. Despite the growing application of videoconf...
